The Future Needs Us Now
Reimagining Health Care
Looking to the future, Wisconsin Medicine is focused on transforming the patient experience. With your support, the aims are to improve access to care and provide a consistent, well-coordinated experience that will allow patients to see various providers during a single visit rather than making multiple visits (sometimes at different locations).
To make this vision a reality, the new UW Health Eastpark Medical Center — a state-of-the-art, seven-story outpatient facility — will soon be built on the east side of Madison.
Slated to open in 2024, Eastpark Medical Center will be more than just a new building. It will be the physical manifestation of the future of UW Health housing two nationally recognized programs: Adult Oncology and Women’s Specialty Care. It will also include numerous other adult specialty clinics, advanced imaging and laboratory services, and spaces for innovative clinical trials.
The Eastpark Medical Center’s opening will also usher in the next evolution in cancer treatment.
UW Health recently announced the first proton treatment in Wisconsin, which offers state of the art treatment with pinpoint accuracy to destroy cancer cells, even in hard-to-reach tumors close to vital organs and tissues.
We will also become the first in the world to utilize upright treatment technology which will dramatically improve the patient experience.
Patients can have a significantly more comfortable treatment experience in the upright position, allowing for easier breathing and reduced chance of dysphagia and gastric reflux.
The upright position is more natural and comfortable for many patients, a particular advantage for children who often require sedation for radiation treatment in the prone position.
Upright care allows for better interaction with the care team, with patients looking eye-to-eye with their care provider, taking on cancer together.
In addition, the Eastpark Medical Center will be a dynamic state-of-the-art facility designed with lessons learned from the pandemic. It will be equipped with a full digital health strategy that will allow for constant connectivity through virtual visits (and telehealth) and collaboration with providers who may be outside the UW Health system. This will allow for UW Health physicians and referring physicians to better coordinate care, which will improve outcomes.
Like in other UW Health facilities, patients at the new Eastpark Medical Center will have access to the latest in translational research studies and clinical trials through our partnership with UW School of Medicine and Public Health. At Eastpark, clinical trials will be fully integrated into a patient’s treatment plan.
Excellence, however, does not happen by chance. It will take commitment and philanthropic support to elevate Eastpark Medical Center. With your help, skilled medical professionals will have the remarkable resources to advance health care for communities in Wisconsin and beyond and deliver unrivaled care to patients.
